What makes CatScapes unique?
The main difference between CatScapes Cat Shelves and other cat shelves, is that most cat shelves are perches which compel the cats to jump rather than run, sit rather than play. While jumps are entertaining for humans, most cats prefer to run and climb - really fast. CatScapes Cat Shelves are customizable platforms, ramps, and runways that interconnect seamlessly, thanks to CatScapes' patented hinge-brackets. This is an entirely reimagined solution for human-feline cohabitation. CatScapes Cat Shelves are a hybrid of finished product, mechanism, and method for creating a "catscape" tailored to ones home and cats.
How did the idea come about?
An unexpected journey
With no intention of inventing anything, co-founder and CEO, Aaron Feldman created his first "catscape" using a combination of existing products. The result was fun for the cats but a hodgepodge of styles that made the environment look like a jungle gym for cats or a zoo enclosure. To create a more consistent look would have required using the same shelf over and over in a repetitive manner. Another option would be to hire a cat-savvy designer-builder to make a custom catscape, which is hard to find and far more expensive.
Creating a prefabricated, cohesive, and expandable system that can be adapted to any environment, incorporating flexible angles and varied shelf-lengths became the objective. Aaron Feldman and co-founder/co-inventor, Trevor Thorpe, spent almost three years developing and refining the elegant solution of CatScapes hinge-brackets.
Both the brackets and the entire wall system are now patented.
Inspired by a love for cats
The importance of emulating nature for the cats is further infused by Mr. Feldman's experience as a somatic-therapist, a type of therapy that acknowledges the mind-body connection. Observing how cats are stifled by flat, horizontal, and slippery surfaces that are common to most human homes and even cat shelves, and a common lack of welcome climbing and running opportunities, Mr. Feldman believes that feline emotional-physical health and satisfaction requires environments that permit and even encourage the cats to move with their extraordinary speed, strength, and agility. Just as humans benefit from a diverse workout, offering spans at varied angles, similar to hills and trees, allows the cats to engage muscles that otherwise atrophy indoors.
